Frosted Grass

Ice Dyeing on a Frosty Day

06/12/2016

We have had a few very chilly days here in North Yorkshire with sharp frosty mornings. The stillness of the air allows the ice to encase all it touches creating some lovely photo opportunities and inspiring me to find some silk fabrics and ice dye them.

Cobweb Tree

The only control over the end result is the folding and scrunching of the fabric, deciding on the colours and the distribution of the dye sprinkled over the ice cubes. The rest is alchemy!!!

Black Ice

After a day or two of waiting for the ice to slowly melt I open out the silk pieces to discover a whole range of colours from the separation of the pigments in the dye and the amazing shapes created on the silk.

Hanging them out to dry on the line, a whole range of original ice dyed silks.
