Scratching the Surface
Acrylic and wax on paper
I produced this work after a visit to Iceland in January 2016.
The country is incredible, the weather, the people, the sheer daunting vibrancy of the land.
I spent a morning inside a lava tube. Not a place I would generally venture but curiosity overcame my fear of tight dark places. The beauty of the rock formations and soft colours layered over each other on the roof of the caves inspired the surface textures and colours in this piece.
The piece is made from many layers of paint and hot wax, rubbed, dragged and scratched back to reveal the base colours below.
